Sylvester and theMagic Pebble

Sylvester and the Magic Pebble was written by William Steig and illustrated by him as well. This book is a modern folktale written as a moral lesson for young children. It was published by Simon and Schuster Books for Young Children in 1970 and reissued in hardcover in 2005. The book also won a Caldecott Medal in 1970. The main character of this story is Sylvester the donkey, who while exploring finds a magic pebble. When he wishes on the pebble his wish is granted, but when a lion frightens him and he makes an ill-advised wish, Sylvester is turned into a rock. His family searches for him for along time, but they cant find him. As a rock, he can't hold the pebble to wish himself back into a donkey. He finally turns back into himself when, while on a picnic, his parents place the magic pebble on Sylvester the rock. the theme of this story is be careful what you wish for!
